Education & Programs

WELCOME TO THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

This department exists to serve the North Country community and visitors who have come to the museum to see Remington’s art firsthand. Our public programs are designed to educate audiences about Frederic Remington and the visual arts and to complement permanent and temporary art exhibitions. We offer a broad variety of programs for all ages, including regularly scheduled tours for interested parties; an annual tea series run by our volunteers; a holiday open house in December, art camps, and much more!

It is a priority of this department to offer programming for students on site and off that supports the museum’s mission and New York State educational standards. We want young people in the North Country to come to know and love Frederic Remington’s Western and North Country art and to feel that this is their museum.

Many teachers already have an active relationship with the museum, and we welcome others to contact us and explore programming and learning opportunities. Our policy is flexibility, and we’ll do just about anything to make our programs more applicable and meaningful to what teachers are covering in their classrooms! In spring 2007 our educators created a curriculum based tour and outreach program with specialized lessons and activities for each grade level, K – 12, to ensure a unique experience at every age either at the museum or in the classroom.

Another major function of this department is recruiting, training and supporting volunteers, who help the museum with their talents, commitment, and creativity, and ultimately make it possible for us to serve the community in many of our functions and operations. Every winter, we have a volunteer-training program for new tour guides, while volunteers who seek more behind-the-scenes kinds of experiences can simply contact the education department to inquire about individual training.
